Competition Details

Poems may be on any subject or style and MUST NOT have been previously published, or posted on a website or blog. Poems posted on members-only writing groups for workshop purposes as part of the creative process are not deemed to have been previously published. Poems must also not be under consideration for publication or accepted for publication elsewhere, and may not be simultaneously entered into another competition.

Length: Maximum 50 lines per poem

Entry Fees: £3.00/1 poem, £6.00/2 poems, £9.00/3 poems, £11.00/4 poems, £12.00/5 poems, £16.00/7 poems, and £22.00/10 poems. (You may enter as many poems as you wish – with the applicable fees.

Prizes: First: £150.00 ($238.00), Second: £75.00 ($119.00), Third: £50.00 ($79.00), Highly Commended: £10 x 3. ($16.00 x 3) Note: Dollar equivalents are based on exchange rate on 7-april-2012.

Results due: 31st July, 2012 announced in Sentinel Literary Quarterly magazine online at: http://sentinelquarterly.com/competitions/results.htm

First Publication: The three winning poems, three highly commended poems, plus nine other poems (15 poems in total) will receive first publication in Sentinel Champions magazine in print and eBook in February 2013. The authors will each receive a free contributor's copy.

Anniversary Year Giveaway: As part of the celebration to mark 10 years of Sentinel Poetry Movement, 1 entrant to this quarter's poetry competition will receive a year's free subscription to Sentinel Champions magazine.

About the judge

Will Daunt is the author of five poetry books including Distant Close, The Good is Abroad, Running out of England, and Powerless - a winner in the 2010 Indigo Dreams collection competition. He has reviewed for Envoi and New Hope International. Daunt lives in Ormskirk, Lancashire.

International/Online entrants may enter by e-mail and pay entry fees securely by Paypal. To enter by this method please follow these steps:

Select the option that matches your entry preference from the paypal drop-down button below and make the applicable payment. After making your payment, you will be given a Transaction ID or Receipt Number by Paypal. Make a note of the Transaction ID.
Submit your poems and a cover note with your Name, E-mail Address, Postal Address, Telephone Number and Titles of your poems to: competitions@sentinelpoetry.org.uk as a Word or rtf attachment. In the subject line, type SLQ POETRY JULY 2012 Followed by your Transaction ID. You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of poems within 48 hours.
Your name or any personally identifying marks may not appear on any of your poetry pages.
If you are entering more than 1 poem, please start every poem on a new page.
IMPORTANT: If your payment name is different from your name or pen name, or if somebody is paying for your entry, clearly indicate this in your cover note.
SKY DRIVE: Please avoid using Sky Drive to submit your work unless you know what you are doing. We have so many people submitting multiple files by Sky Drive that all link to single items.

Terms & Conditions/Privacy Policy:

You may enter as many poems as you wish with the applicable entry fees.
If you win one of the prizes in this quarter’s competition, you will NOT be prohibited from entering next quarter’s competition.
Judges read the poems without any indication of the identity of the authors. If the same poet wins more than one prize, in the interest of fairness we WILL award it.
The decision of the judge is final, and no communication will be entered into.
If on the advice of the judge, the quality of entries is too low to produce worthy prize winners, or any other legitimate reason beyond our control arises which may affect a fair completion or conduct of the competition, we reserve the right to cancel the competition and refund all entry fees immediately by the same method we have been paid.
We reserve the right to reapportion the prize money if necessary in the interest of continuity as an alternative to cancellation of the competition.
If you would like an acknowledgement of postal entries, please enclose an SAE marked “acknowledgement”.
The Judge’s Report will be published in Sentinel Literary Quarterly on 31st July, 2012. This publication is online, at www.sentinelquarterly.com if you would like to receive the Judges’ Report in the post, please enclose an SAE marked “Judges’ Report SLQ Poetry July 2012”.
All prizewinners will be notified by post or e-mail within 7 days of the announcement of the results. These notifications will be accompanied with a prize claim invoice.
By entering this competition you provide some information such as your address and e-mail address which may be deemed personal information. These will be processed according to the data protection acts1998 and 2002. We will never pass on any detail you provide in the course of entering this competition to a third party and we will never sell your data to anyone for marketing purposes.
By entering this competition you agree that we may contact you by e-mail or post via our newsletter with the results of the competition, the adjudicator’s reports and information on future competitions. You may unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time.
